Curriculum notification behavior and available workarounds

Summary

When a learner is assigned to a curriculum, SharePoint Sapiens processes the assignment as a collection of individual course enrollments. As a result, the system sends one email notification per course contained in the curriculum.
At this time, a consolidated or curriculum‑level notification is not supported.

This article explains how curriculum notifications currently work and outlines a recommended workaround to reduce email volume while still providing curriculum‑specific guidance.

How Curriculum Notifications Work

A curriculum consists of multiple courses.
When a user is assigned to the curriculum, the system automatically enrolls the user in each course. Because email notifications are triggered at the course level, each course generates its own “Course Assigned” email.

Current limitations

• No curriculum‑level email template exists.

• The system cannot consolidate multiple course notifications into a single curriculum‑level message.

• Curriculum‑specific messaging cannot be injected into the standard course‑assigned email template.

Workaround: Use an “Introduction” or “Getting Started” Course

To minimize the number of emails a learner receives, you can configure notifications so that only one course triggers an email—while the others remain silent.

Steps

1. Create an “Introduction” or “Getting Started” course for the curriculum.
   This course acts as the communication hub for the entire learning path.

2. Enable email notifications only for this course.

   • For all other courses in the curriculum, disable the “Course Assigned” email notification in the course form using the Send email column.

3. Use the introduction course page to provide all curriculum‑specific information, such as:

   • Welcome or onboarding message

   • Overview of the curriculum

   • Explanation of the learning path

   • Links to all included courses

   • Completion expectations and deadlines

   • Any additional guidance or resources

Outcome

When learners are enrolled in the curriculum:

• They receive one introductory email from the introduction course.

• All other course assignments occur silently.

• Learners still have full access to every course included in the curriculum.
