How to: Send an e-mail reminder for an event

SharePoint does not automatically send out e-mail reminders for events, however, it is fairly simple to do this anyway. All you need to do is to create a workflow in SharePoint designer which starts when an item is created or changed. Below is an example of a workflow you could create.

Email reminder workflow

This workflow will send an email to all attendees 10 days before the start of the event. It is important to include the two parallel steps. The first step sends the email at the time specified above and the second step checks to see if the event date has been changed and if it has it cancels the workflow. As the workflow is also configured to start when an item is changed, this will restart the workflow.
