How to: Configure the SharePoint Filter Web Part

This post describes how to configure the SharePoint Filter Web Part.

After you have installed the solution and activated the “sapiens.at.SharePoint List Filter Web Part” feature in your site collection’s features, you can add the SharePoint Filter Web Part to any web part page.

If you want to add the web part to an existing view page, you have to edit the page, close the existing List View Web Part and add the Filter Web Part. If you do it this way, the correct view is already configured.

Otherwise you have to configure the list and the view first.

In the next section you have to select the fields you want to search using the keyword search on the top left.

Note: Choose only the fields you really need, as this has huge impact on search performance!

Now select the fields you want to use for the to refine the information.

Note: Choose only the fields you really need, as this has huge impact on the overall performance of the web part!

In the Look and Feel Section you can configure:

  • the number of columns to align the refining fields,
  • if the filter details should be expanded by default (the filter details can be expanded/collapsed using the arrow on the top right),
  • if a menu to save filter settings should be displayed (this can be used to create reusable private and public filters),
  • if a print button should be displayed (the print buttons opens the filter web part and all results in a new window),
  • if the ‘Export to Excel’ button should be displayed (the button opens the results in Excel),
  • if multiple values should be included when refining (a combination of values can also be selected).
